August 28- Sept. 1
Ages 9-14 Marquette, MI. A deep dive into cardboard as a definitive building and design material. I don’t know if everyone truly understands how awesome cardboard is… I’m ready to help you understand!
As a working artist, I engage with kids as co-creators, seeking to share knowledge and expertise in context as ideas unfold and discoveries are made. I also share the art research processes and methods I use in my own art practice, as we take on projects big and small.
Camp days are filled with building and making, provocations, games, a daily field trip, lots of thoughtful discussions and of course the Art/insanity part!
Cost: (cash or check only) payable the first day of camp.
Monday-Friday, Drop-off 7:30am-8am, Pick-up 5pm.
Location: All-Phase Electric Building, Marquette, MI. We'll be setting up our workshop in the former Carpenter/ Millwright Union. The space has unfinished floors and can be a little dusty. Please dress accordingly. Attendees will have access to drinking water to refill water bottles and bathrooms.
Schedule: The general schedule is to start with a provocation related to cardboard and then alternate throughout the day between some smaller projects and a bigger week-long build. We take breaks to walk to South Beach and swim/ look at bugs/ wildlife and hunt for berries along the way. We usually set a rough schedule every morning and adapt it as the day, project focus, and inventions/discoveries unfold.
Food: Campers should bring a lunch and snacks with them each day. We will take a snack break mid-morning, and eat lunch around noon.
C.A.M.P.: The goal is to build something AWESOME, as my friend Dustin would say, "Just for the glory of it." Kids are given a challenge, problem or adventure protocol to ponder and they build a structure/ vehicle/thing and we (the staff) do our best to support kids in making it all happen.
The basic idea is this: build something incredibly exciting with a group of new friends and then parade it, try it, test drive it.
Examples of cardboard building projects include: boats, bridges, forts and wheeled human-pushed-around vehicles, cardboard fashion cat walks, cardboard playscapes and villages, giant cardboard creatures, nomadic shelters; anything that Harold might draw with a purple crayon.
How Kids Learn to use Tools: We notice that when kids build and use tools in social contexts and spend time making things that they care about, the most important thing they build is a sense of confidence in themselves and each other. Tools we will use at camp include Bostitch Staplers, serrated cardboard cutters, and scissors.
What to Bring:
Swimsuit, towel and wet bag
Your own lunch and snacks
Please wear close-toed shoes for use in the workshop.
Crew: builders ages 9-14. We seek a diverse, fun-loving, gender and age-balanced camp and staff.
Access: Our location is adjacent to Mares-Z-Doats in the former Carpenters and Millwright Union building. You will see a brick smoke stack that says, “ All-phase Electric” nearby. We will have signage out on the road to help you find the turn-off.
Staff:
Amber Dohrenwend: is a local artist and educator who builds costumes, sculptures and installations out of cardboard. She recently moved home to Marquette after living and raising a family abroad Japan for the last 14 years.
An additional cardboard-loving adult staff member will join us for camp!
